We recommend that you look at these 4 factors before you decide what chiropractor to go to. Please consider looking for a Pittsburgh chiropractor who is evidence based, does not force ridiculous pre-paid care packages on you, does not require you to have x-rays taken, and does not tell you that subluxations are the cause of all diseases. An evidence based chiropractor is one that knows their limitations and understands what the research says. Research supports that conservative care, such as the type of care that chiropractors can offer, is an effective treatment approach for a wide range of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. In fact, for many neuromusculoskeletal conditions, conservative care should be the first line of treatment, as it is often effective and costs less, comparatively. The research, however, does not support chiropractic care for the treatment of systemic conditions such as cancer, heart disease, etc. A chiropractor could help you with your diet which may help lower your odds for developing a systemic condition, but a chiropractor cannot cure these conditions. Anyone who tells you otherwise is likely trying to sell you something. Speaking of someone trying to sell you something, if a chiropractor is trying to sell you long, drawn out pre-paid care packages, you should probably avoid them. Usually, providers who tell you that it takes months or years to correct your neuromusculoskeletal condition are just trying to get you to buy expensive care plans. The majority of conditions should respond to conservative care in around 12 visits. Avoid chiropractors who try to sell you packaged care plans of 40+ visits to correct your spinal curvature, which they showed you was screwed up on your x-rays. X-rays are not required for the majority of patients with neuromusculoskeletal conditions. They are only ever needed to rule out red flags that can’t be ruled out through the examination process. If a chiropractor is forcing you to have x-rays taken before they even examine you, then you should probably avoid them as some chiropractors use these as a selling point. This is also not supported by research. Sometimes these chiropractors will tell you that your x-rays show that you have subluxations. You should probably avoid these chiropractors too. The word “subluxation”, as used by the chiropractic profession, is outdated. There are chiropractors who will tell you that subluxations are the root cause of all diseases. The evidence does not support that assertion, and you should avoid chiropractors who tell you so. At Tauberg Chiropractic & Rehabilitation we avoid using the term “subluxation” altogether, as it is very poorly defined by the chiropractic profession.

What the research is currently saying
Neck pain can be caused by many different things, but the 4 most common causes of neck pain are disc derangement, joint dysfunction, radiculopathy, and myofascial pain. What this means is that most common neck pain either comes from the disc, the joint, the nerve, or the muscles of the neck. Each of these types of neck pain has a different presentation and treatment. Pain that comes from the disc usually causes localized neck pain, but can also cause pain to shoot down the arm. This type of neck pain is treated with directional preference exercises. Neck pain that comes from the joints is almost always localized and there is often a lack of motion in the neck associated with the pain. When pain comes from the joint it is best treated with traction, mobilization, or manipulation. The pain in the neck that comes from the nerves is very sharp and often goes into the arms and down to the hands. There can be associated numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness with neck pain that comes from the nerves. This type of pain is best treated with neuro-mobilization exercises. Neck pain that comes from the muscles is often localized and the muscles will be very tender. This type of neck pain is best treated with soft tissue work which will stretch out and loosen the muscles.
The most common causes of back pain are disc derangement, joint dysfunction, radiculopathy and myofascial pain. They are the same 4 causes of pain as neck pain. There are certainly other causes of low back pain but these 4 are the most common. Each of these types of low back pain includes many different diagnoses. Disc derangement is the most common cause of low back pain. It also might be the hardest to understand. Disc derangement is pain that comes directly from the disc. This pain may be localized or have a radiating component to it. Disc derangement is best treated with directional preference exercises. Joint dysfunction in the low back causes pain that comes from the facet joints. This pain is usually due to the joint not functioning properly, which could be due to trauma or overuse. Spinal manipulation is the treatment of choice for joint dysfunction. Radiculopathy in the low back is pain that comes from a nerve root. Sciatica is a type of radiculopathy. Radiculopathy in the low back causes radiating pain that will often go all the way down the leg and into the foot. Radiculopathy can be extremely unpleasant and difficult to live with. Neuro-mobilization exercises seem to be effective in helping to reduce or eliminate pain that is from radiculopathy. Myofascial low back pain is pain that comes from the muscles and other soft tissues of the low back. Often the muscles of the low back will be tight due to overuse or trauma. Soft tissue work is great at effectively loosening the muscles and relieving pain.
Sports injuries and Rehabilitation:
Injuries are a part of sports. They are common in sports and they can have real life consequences. While there are a wide array of different sports injuries, they all have one thing in common: they need proper treatment. For the majority of sports injuries, this means going through rehabilitation. Experts agree there are 4 main stages to rehabilitation. Those 4 stages are inflammation and pain reduction, restoration of range of motion, strength and endurance training, return to functional activities. While these 4 stages sometimes have gray lines between them, hitting each one is vital towards making a complete recovery from an injury. In the first stage, the goal is to protect the injured area from further damage, and at the same time eliminate the pain and inflammation that is present in the area. This is often done using the PRICE method which stands for protect, rest, ice, compress, and elevate. These are typically the first steps that you take after an injury has occurred. Following this, the second stage of rehabilitation is all about returning the range of motion to the injured area. Often this involves plenty of soft tissue work and hands on therapy that mobilizes and manipulates the joints surrounding an injury. The goal in this phase of rehab is to completely restore motion in the area. Once the area is able to move in all the planes of direction that it is supposed to move in, the next step is to strengthen the area. This leads us to the third stage of rehabilitation. In the third stage, the goal is to restore strength and eventually, endurance to the injured area. This is usually done with exercises that specifically target the injured tissue. Once strength is close to being what it was prior to the injury, the next stage of rehabilitation should begin. In the fourth stage, the goal is to return the injured person to the activities they were performing before they got injured. If the injured person is an athlete this may mean returning to a sport or if they are not an athlete it may just mean returning to being able to lift the groceries. This is accomplished through exercises that specifically resemble the activities the injured person is trying to return to. Instead of focusing in on just the injured part of the body this stage forces the all the parts of the body to act as a whole unit. By going through these 4 stages of rehabilitation we are able to reduce the likelihood that an injury will reoccur, and simultaneously returning the injured person back to everyday routines and activities. Rehabilitation needs to be individualized to the person and their goals but these 4 stages are always the way in which rehabilitation should progress.
Dr. Alex Tauberg is originally from the Pittsburgh area and loves serving the community he grew up in. He has lived in the Pittsburgh area for all of his life, with the exception of the years he was in college and graduate school. He was born in Magee-Women’s Hospital. The Taubergs lived near Frick Park until Alex was around 5 years old. They then moved to O’Hara Township, where Alex went to preschool at the Laurie Ann West Community Center. Alex grew up in O’Hara Township and attended O’Hara Elementary, Dorseyville Middle School, and Fox Chapel High School. Alex left Pittsburgh during his college and graduate school years, only to return to the area from sunny Florida because he missed the community feel. He attributes Pittsburgh with playing a large part in his life. His family has lived in the Pittsburgh area for multiple generations and have also attended the University of Pittsburgh for multiple generations. Dr. Tauberg loves to give back to Pittsburgh, and believes the best way that he can do that is by providing high quality health care to the residents of the area. He strives to do that every day and loves working with Pittsburghers. He is an avid sports fan and also enjoys working with local athletes. Dr. Tauberg is a huge Pitt, Steelers and Penguins fan, and has followed the teams for as long as he can remember. While he does not have as much free time these days, he can almost always be found near a TV when one of his teams are playing. He loves to talk about sports as well as play them.
Pittsburgh loves sports--that is undeniable. But Pittsburgh is really a football town. We love our Steelers--how could you not? They have a winning tradition and are known for being the best team in the NFL. But just because Pittsburgh is a “football town”, doesn’t mean we don’t love our other teams as well. The Penguins have been a lot of fun to watch for the large part of the last 30 years. From Sidney to Mario, they are truly exciting. Dr. Tauberg loves Pittsburgh sports, and enjoys discussing them with his patients. Any time you are in the office, just bring up the latest news in Pittsburgh sports and Dr. Tauberg will be delighted to talk about it with you. He is a lifelong Steelers, Penguins, Pitt, and yes, even a Pirates fan. He loves going to games at Heinz Field, PNC Park, and PPG Paints Arena. His favorite team is probably the Penguins, being that he plays hockey, but the Steelers are not far behind. It is not uncommon for Dr. Tauberg to indulge in conversations regarding free agency or trade rumors.
